Brilliant Blue National Challenge 2025 - Canada’s Young Ocean Innovators
On June 7th, 2025, the Brilliant Blue Canadian National Challenge brought together youth from across Canada at Dalhousie University in Halifax, NS. The competition featured three categories: Healthy Marine Life, Marine Autonomous Systems, and Marine Renewable Energy. Each category crowned a winning team as well as one overall winner:
- Team JEDI T: winners of the Healthy Marine Life category for their innovative AI-powered system to track and deter invasive green crabs, protecting ecosystems and biodiversity.
- Grammar Gryphons: winners of the Marine Autonomous Systems category with their robotics and AI solution to detect hypoxia zones, giving scientists tools to act before ecosystems collapse.
- Hydro Girls: winners of the Marine Renewable Energy category with their creative project, Tide Tuners, which explores a vertical-axis turbine in the Bay of Fundy to harness powerful tides for clean and sustainable energy.
- Zepaquweveex Wind Project: overall winner of the Brilliant Blue National Challenge from Annapolis West Education Centre. Their team designed an optimized offshore wind turbine system, improving efficiency and durability to advance renewable energy solutions and help build a cleaner energy future.
A $5,000 prize, funded by the Government of Nova Scotia, supported the winning teams, helping them further develop their innovative projects and prepare to represent Canada at the Brilliant Blue Global Challenge on October 17th & 18th in Dartmouth, NS & online.
